Join Chris, as we kick-start the festival with our poetry writing workshop that takes your musical memories as inspiration.

Did your first love give you a mixtape of 70s Glam rock? Did your best mate get you into Britpop with a compilation tape? Did a carefully assembled Motown cassette turn you into a soul fanatic? Whether it’s a C60 cassette, a burned CD, or a digital playlist that sparks a memory, this informal and practical workshop will lead you through some fun writing prompts and exercises – that will unlock your creativity and take you dancing down unexpected poetry paths.

This workshop is for writers of all abilities. So, just bring your pad, your pen, and your curiosity…and don’t worry, no prior knowledge of mixtapes or poetry is necessary!

Chris Sewart has recently lead writing workshops at Beverley Minster, and for the Philip Larkin Society. He was the Festival Poet at the Stage 4 Beverley 2026 Festival, at which he also debuted his second solo show, How to Fold a Paper Aeroplane. He has poems and short stories in recent collections from: The Fig Tree; Write Out Loud, Thelmezine, Broken Sleep and Crossing The Tees. He is a member of the Poetry Society and the Society of Authors.
